A National Taiwan University （NTU） graduate student who was reportedly detained by police in Hong Kong on Saturday during a vigil to commemorate the Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing in 1989 has been released on bail, the NTU Graduate Student Association said yesterday.
Lau Ka-yee （劉家儀） is from Hong Kong and studies at the university’s Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, but has been on an academic leave of absence since 2019.
Lau yesterday morning said on Facebook that she was safe, NTU Graduate Student Association head Hsu Kuan-tze （許冠澤） said, citing Lau’s friends who shared the information.
Thanking everyone who had expressed concern, Lau wrote that she was detained from Saturday to Sunday on a sedition charge and released on bail within 48 hours.
Lau wrote that had she had fasted for 24 hours to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, adding that she was “temporarily safe.”
She was arrested at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay while wearing a T-shirt depicting a candle and the Chinese character for “truth” after declaring her intention to fast, online media platform The Collective HK said.
Lau once ran in Hong Kong’s district council elections.
She completed a bachelor’s degree in history at National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan, Hong Kong media reported.
The Mainland Affairs Council in a statement on Sunday called on the Hong Kong government to respect freedom of expression.
Taiwan’s government is highly concerned about the arrest of students from Hong Kong studying in Taiwan for attending events marking the anniversary of the military suppression of the 1989 protests in Beijing, the council said.
It said it would work with the Ministry of Education and NTU to provide all necessary assistance to protect students’ rights, and urged Hong Kong authorities to allow them to return to Taiwan to continue their studies.
